Training seminars

As part of the SEENET programme several workshops took place on topics identified as priority training needs in South-East Europe and the Black Sea Area. The workshops addressed, among others, the need to include ecological networks in regional planning or the need for fundraising in South-East Europe and the Black Sea Area.

‘Natura 2000 implementation with focus on mapping of habitat types and species and on involving stakeholders in nature protection according to European standards in Ukraine’
23-25 October 2007, Lvov, Ukraine

The aim of the meeting was to raise capacities and capabilities of experts in the neighbouring countries to the EU on modern ways of a) mapping and monitoring habitat types and species according to European directives, and b) identifying stakeholders, involving stakeholders and performing stakeholder consultations in the implementation process of European standards.

The target groups of meeting were experts from the CERI member organisations in Ukraine, plus representatives from relevant government organisations from Ukraine.

‘Towards an international working group for the conservation of a trans-boundary key biodiversity area (Posof-Akhaltsikhe) lying on the border of Turkey and Georgia’
17-19 October 2007, Posof, Ardahan, Turkey (A Turkish town on the border of Turkey and Georgia)

The aim of the meeting was to establish an international working group to analyse the existing situation in Posof (Turkey), Akhaltsikhe (Georgia) and look for trans-boundary cooperation opportunities between two countries. In this three-day meeting the biodiversity values were shared with the other country experts and officers, conservation status of the Posof Wildlife Protection Area was investigated through a one-day field work. Finally a draft operational plan for the working group was prepared to form the basis for the next two meetings in 2007 and 2008 to finalize the trans-boundary strategy. The international working group established during this first meeting was the first real on-the-ground trans-boundary conservation work between Turkey and Georgia.

‘Capacity Building for Ecological Networks Management Training’
15-19 October 2007, Gabrovo – Central Balkan National Park, Bulgaria

The training meeting covered the following main topics: best practice in designing eco-networks and management of their constituent parts and natural resources (eco-networks concept and existing international experience information on establishing CBC in other EU MS; sustainable natural resources management and economic incentives for nature protection; design of information centres and production of public awareness materials); administration and funding of the eco-network; monitoring, data collection and analysis for eco-network management using GIS and related software; the Bulgarian eco-networks identified as a part of the ECNC SEE eco-net design effort.

‘Harmonising nature protection management practices along transboundary protected areas’
03-05 October 2007, Tikves castle complex, Kopacki rit Nature Park, Croatia
The aims of the meeting were to present best practices in nature protection, forestry and water management along transboundary protected areas of the Danube river, to enhance cooperation among transboundary protected areas, particularly Danube river floodplain in Central Europe, to harmonise nature protection management along transboundary protected areas.

The target group of meeting covered transboundary protected areas managers (Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic), international NGOs (ECNC, WWF, Euronatur) and selected national stakeholders (forestry, water management).

‘Regional workshop for development of Pan-European Ecological Network (PEEN)
7-9 June 2007, Osogovo Region, Republic of Macedonia

The goal of the workshop was to present the concept of PEEN, activities for development of PEEN at European, regional and national levels, importance of spatial planning for development of PEEN, case studies with good examples for development of PEEN on a national level that could be used in the countries of the Region, needs and possibilities for cooperation between neighbouring countries in the process of development of PEEN, as well as proposals for future joint activities and pilot projects for development of PEEN in the Balkan region. The target group of the workshop was composed of people working in the field of biodiversity protection, conservation and management of landscape and in the framework of spatial and regional planning.

‘Building links between national nature reserves for conflict resolution’
23 - 27 May 2007, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

The aims of the workshop were:

Learning how to deal with conflicts between nature parks and reserves on the one side and local communities on the other side in a training session
Bringing together Ukrainian national nature parks and reserves in order to exchange experience and learn from each other and from abroad practices
Contributing to a better communication between the concerned institutions
Facilitating the establishment of the Pan-European Ecological Network: a programme focusing on South-East Europe and the Black Sea Area (SEENET)
Creating a communication system between participants for future cooperation and information exchange
The target groups were key persons of national reserves and parks from the Carpathian and Black Sea regions of Ukraine responsible for area management and public relations. The seminar addressed key persons of local, regional and national administration.

The event languages were English and Ukrainian.

‘Steps for the establishment of the National Ecological Network of Romania’
23 - 27 May, Maramures (Romania)
The aim of this meeting was to start working on national level on the integration aspects of Natura 2000, to discuss the main targets of a National Ecological Network, the major steps, how it could be designed and implemented in a realistic way. The National Meeting on Ecological Networks should strengthen the cooperation between the major nature conservation initiatives, to put the basis of a common understanding of the Ecological Network issue, to establish a timetable for the design and implementation of a National Ecological Network.
